The Bulgarian nationalist party VMRO is going to start collecting signatures to petition the government to veto Turkey’s EU entry.

This has been announced by the VMRO leader, Krasimir Karakachanov, who also made it clear that his party is going to come up with its own candidate for Bulgaria’s 2011 Presidential Elections.

However, Karakachanov declared that organizing a petition against Turkey’s EU accession was a priority for his party, and that VMRO is going to start discussing its presidential candidate only after its campaign aimed at urging the Bulgarian authorities to prevent Turkey from joining the EU.

The VMRO-BND party is considered a descendant of the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary organization from the end of the 19th century fighting to liberate the regions of Thrace and Macedonia from the Ottoman Turkish Empire. The VMRO party is currently undergoing a crisis as many of its members who supported the Plovdiv Mayor Slavcho Atanasov for party leader at the latest congress have recently set up a twin organization called VMRO-NIE.
