The average salary of women in Bulgaria is currently 15,7% lower than that of men according to a Confederation of Independent Bulgarian Unions (KNSB) report.

The KNSB report published Thursday at a conference for gender equality also stated that women are the majority of the unemployed in Bulgaria and often become victims of human trafficking. It added that there is currently a “feminization of poverty” occurring in the country.

Other statistics in the report revealed that families in which women are the main bread winner are 25-30% poorer than those who are led by men.

Deputy Social Minister Valentina Simeonova concluded that the percentage of working women in Bulgaria is still much less than the % of working men – National Statistical Institute data shows that 58,3% of women of working age are currently employed, whereas 66,9% of men are employed.
