The Interior Minister of the German Province of Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, advised Bulgaria to carry out urgent reforms in the Penal Code.

Herrmann, who is on an official visit to Bulgaria Thursday, spoke during a meeting with his counterpart, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, pointing out verdicts in Bavaria are much harsher.

The Bavarian Interior Minister gave high marks to the efforts of the new cabinet to fight corruption and organized crime, and to the bi-lateral cooperation with Bulgaria. He further voiced support for the country's Schengen zone entry.

Hermann stressed on the importance of securing outside borders and appealed to Bulgaria to build a system for optimum control on the common border with Turkey because the latter is the main route for illegal drugs traveling from the Middle East to Central and Eastern Europe.

“Bulgaria is a reliable partner in efforts to stop trans-border criminal activities such as drug trafficking, counterfeit currency, and skimming devices,” the German Minister pointed out.

Hermann also met with Prime Minister, Boyko Broisov, who asked for Germany's assistance in Bulgaria's absorption of EU funds needed for road repairs and highway construction. The two further discussed the cabinet's efforts to combat crime and corruption and the German-Bulgarian economic ties.

During the meeting, the Bavarian Interior Head reiterated praises about the government's “brave actions to guarantee internal stability and combat crime,” adding Germany wishes for a strong Bulgaria on the Balkans and is ready to provide financial, and technical assistance.
