The reforms of the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party managed to reinstate European trust in Bulgaria, according to Wilfred Martens, President of European People's Party (EPP).

Martens is in Sofia Wednesday to participate in the international conference devoted to Bulgaria's best practices to combat corruption.

The EPP President said that his statement is based on the fact the European Commission has released millions in EU funds that were previously blocked for Bulgaria, and on the stark change of the general attitude towards the country across Europe.

According to Martens, in the months since the general elections in July 2009, GERB had achieved impressive results in the economic sector and in the fight against corruption and organized crime and Bulgaria is a totally different country, compared to what he has seen during his last visit in February, 2009.

The EPP leader pointed out that the road ahead is still long, but Bulgaria has definitely stepped on the right path.

The EPP General Secretary, Antonio Lopez, reiterated his commitment to lobby for Bulgaria in Europe, adding when he met Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, for the first time, 7 years ago, he immediately knew this was the man Bulgaria needed.
