The European People’s Party has no criticism for the Bulgarian government of PM Boyko Borisov, according to its Chair, Wilfried Martens.
Martens was in Sofia Tuesday night for the presentation of his book, “Europe: I Struggle, I Overcome”.
“After eight years of liberal and socialist experiments, Bulgaria finally has a strong and reliable government. A government, which is committed to earning the trust of the European institutions,” the EPP leader declared in Sofia describing the Borisov Cabinet as one that has managed to uphold the law in its fight against organized crime. “The results from the reforms so far are raising our hopes,” he said.
Martens is convinced that as a result of the work of the Borisov government Bulgaria will soon be able to join the Eurozone and the Schengen Agreement. He declared that the Cabinet was obliged to fight corruption and organized crime in order to create a secure society.
Martents also declared that the participation of Rumiana Jeleva - Bulgaria's former Foreign Minister and failed EU Commissioner candidate, who is one of the Deputy Chairs of the EPP - is very important for the party.
“I hope that the young generation may be inspired by reading the book,” said the EPP head thanking that his book has been translated and published in Bulgarian.
In his book, Wilfried Martens, who has been in politics for 50 years, tells his political biography including his participation in major events such as the founding of the European People’s Party in 1976, the drafting of the Rome Treaty, and the agreements for the creation of the Schengen Area and the Eurozone.
“We are extremely grateful to Mr. Martens because he and his colleagues from the EPP believe in us and gave Bulgaria the chance to take a new road,” Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said during the presentation of the book.
