A higher level of GMOs than the allowed limit was found in 7% of the food products tested by the Sofia public health body RIOKOZ in 2009.

A high content of GMOs was found predominantly in sausages, wafers and confectionery products. In most cases, the GMO content in these products was over 2% and the limit value in Bulgaria is 0,9%.

RIOKOZ made 149 tests for GMOs in food products in 2009 throughout the country. All of the foods, which contained high levels of GMOs were produced in Bulgaria, explained Lyubina Donkova – Chief of the National Control Laboratory for GMOs. However most of the GMO raw materials for the products were from Argentina, Brazil, and the US – mainly soya.

There has also been an increased number of requests from the general public to RIOKOZ for the testing of products to see if they contain GMOs – anyone can request a product to be tested against a BGN 125 fee.
