Bulgarian politician Rumen Petkov, previously the country's Interior Minister under the Stanishev government, has spoken out on the possibility of the formation of a new left-wing Bulgarian political party.

Petkov expressed the opinion that, while there was certainly room for such a project, nothing "serious" would take place without the support and participation of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

Commenting in a newspaper article on Monday, Petkov, who also served as the Deputy Chair of BSP, said that the Socialists would not take a negative stance on the eventual formation of a new party, but he emphasized that, at the same time, the first task of BSP was to take further "organizational steps for its stabilization".

Petkov repeated his claim, made on March 12, that Deputy PM and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov was to blame for the ongoing scandal involving the President, saying that the tension was due to the "inadequate behavior" of the Finance Minister.

"He allows himself to express allegations about Bulgarian politicians and public figures that are absolutely unacceptable... We are talking about a man who has been compromised in all possible ways - both in his public behavior, and as a manager. We have such a collapse in the revenue part of the budget that, for 15 years in Bulgaria, nobody could have imagined," he observed.

He branded Djankov "a caricature in the state administration" and ironically added that BSP should do everything possible to ensure that he was given the floor every day.

Petkov seriously stated that any political crisis would have extreme consequences for the country.

Commenting on the Prime Minister's statements that he was ready for early elections, the former socialist Interior Minister said: "In this case, it is the Prime Minister himself that has to hold his nerve."
