A Bulgarian truck driver has been caught with 31 kg of captagon, a brand of fenethyline, in Istanbul, Turkey.

Fenethyline is a synthetic drug considered to be a milder version of amphetamine. The specific brand of the fenethyline produced in Bulgaria is known captagon.

The drug is worth EUR 2,5 M, and has been imported from Bulgaria. Its final destination was the markets of the Arab states.

Back in the communist period, the sercret services of the Bulgarian communist regime sponsored the production of captagon and its export to the Arab world which, according to research studies published after 2000, provided profits of up to 2000%. These policies were part of the so called “secret trade” controlled by the communist regime including drugs, arms, gold, antiques.

After 1989, the trafficking channels established by the communist regime, were “privatized” giving rise to mafia structures.
