MPs from the Bulgaria Parliamentary Environment Committee have endorsed further amendments to the GMO Act which prohibit GM crops in the country.

Deputy Environment Minister, Evdokia Maneva, reported Friday that the MPs had unanimously endorsed the proposal made by GERB MP Kostadin Yazov to prohibit the release of GMOs into the environment and also to add that all NATURA 2000 areas will be protected from GMOs.

Maneva added that the changes to Article 80 of the law on GMO make it absolutely impossible to grow GM crops in Bulgaria as they prohibit release into the environment, commercial farming and marketing of GMOs.

She concluded that the GMO Act does not include a specific moratorium on GMOs but that the law changes provide for a practical ban. The second reading of the GMO Act amendments in Parliament has not yet been completed.
