Bulgaria Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov, has again put his voice behind the anti GMO campaigners in the country.

Naydenov said Friday, before the 2nd reading of the amendments to the GMO Act in parliament, that “Tasty Bulgarian tomatoes without GMOs are my top priority as Minister.” He added that the drama regarding GMOs had started when his colleagues from the Environment Minister decided to transpose the mandatory European legislation.

Naydenov continued that for GMO crops to be grown in Bulgaria authorization must be given by the Agriculture Minister – “I’m not giving and will not give any authorization”, he said categorically. He also stated that only GMO testing in laboratory condition will be allowed in Bulgaria.

He concluded that he would support the proposal to make supermarkets and other food stores create separate areas for products containing GMOs and for areas for organic products.

Meanwhile, chaos ensued in the parliament as the GMO Act came up for its second reading without the full text from the Parliamentary environment committee having been decided. After much heated debate the parliament delayed a part of the voting procedure.
