Hours after the ruling party embarked on a quest for the head of President Georgi Parvanov, he invited media representatives at a press conference to discuss the relations among the institutions.

The event will take place on Friday morning.

“In his preamble the head of state will comment issues, concerning the anti-crisis policy of the country, the preparation of Bulgaria's position concerning Europe 2020, as well as the relations among the institutions,” a statement from the president press office reads.

This will be the first time that the Socialist president comments personally his conflict with Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, which prompted the ruling party GERB to start a process for his impeachment.

The last time Georgi Parvanov officially invited media representatives at the presidency was on July 7, two days after the general elections, which were swept by the center-right GERB party, led by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

Earlier in the day Bulgaria’s governing GERB party announced that they will submit a request to Parliament for the initiation of the process for the removal of Bulgaria President Georgi Parvanov.

GERB’s Executive Committee announced that they interpreted the publication of the transcript of the President’s meeting with Finance Minister Simeon Djankov as a violation of the constitution. In Bulgarian law it states that “no citizen can be recorded without his knowledge or...except in cases provided by law”.

An impeachment process is likely to meet strong opposition in the Parliament - it will require 160 MPs votes to trigger the mechanism to fire the President but the current government can currently only count on 154.
