The European Commission on Tuesday authorized the cultivation of a genetically modified potato, developed by German chemical giant BASF, the first such green light for 12 years.

The EC also allowed three GM maize products to be placed on the European market, though not to be grown in Europe.

Last week, Novinite.com, was informed that a prominent group of independent scientists raised “huge concerns” after new EC GMO Draft Regulations were published, which water down ‘Risk Assessment’ rules - leading to the main GM crop seed producer’s own scientists deciding on the risks of GM crops in Europe.

They also called on MEPs in the European Parliament, many of whom had not been informed of the changes, to throw out the proposed draft regulations.

Prior to Tuesday's decision, only MON 810, a Monsanto strain of genetically modified maize, has been authorized for cultivation in Europe. That decision was taken back in 1998 and led to widespread protests.
