The flood threat to Bregovo in North West Bulgaria has decreased after the protective dike to the town was deliberately breached late Monday.

The dike was destroyed late Monday after a helicopter inspection was made by specialists. They found that water had become trapped between 2 local dams.

Bregovo Mayor, Milcho Lalov, reported that the water level had fallen by at least 20 centimeters overnight. Some 90 families had earlier been warned that they might have to be evacuated from their homes, should the water continue to rise.

Around 17 000 decares of agricultural land has been flooded in the area after heavy rain and snow melt caused the River Timok to break its banks.
