The emergency situation affecting the northwestern municipality of Bregovo has become more critical, with 90 families on the point of evacuation as the level of the River Timok continues to rise.

The swollen river has already flooded thousands of decares of agricultural land and several houses. Emergency services have now prepared some 90 riverside households for possible evacuation.

Civil defense teams, aided by border police and volunteers, have worked through the night to reinforce flood defenses with sandbags, Bulgarian National Radio has reported on Monday.

The river has reached the top of the levee in several places, and the residents have been warned they may need to leave their homes imminently.

On Sunday, the already rising levels of the Danube and Timok in the northwestern region of Bulgaria had flooded an area near the Bregovo stadium and the Liviz area.

The Vidin area remains under threat. The town of Lom has already suffered flooding, with part of the Port Lom complex, which is still under construction, having been washed away.
