The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry reports Saturday that they had not received any information about Bulgarian citizens being hurt in the massive 8,8 earthquake that hit Chile.

The Ministry also says that the building of the Bulgarian Embassy in Santiago had not sustained any damage while the employees and their families are doing fine.

Anywhere between 120 and 150 Bulgarians live in Chile. A female Bulgarian is known to reside near the earthquake’s epicenter and the Embassy is trying to locate her, but the efforts are impeded by the disruptions in communications.

The dead toll is currently listed at 82, but it is expected to climb.

The earthquake struck 35 km deep at 06:34 GMT, some 91 km northeast of the city of Concepcion and 317 km southwest of the capital, Santiago.

Buildings in Santiago were reported to have shaken for between 10 and 30 seconds, with the loss of electricity and communications. Preliminary reports list at least 78 casualties and a large number of collapsed buildings.

Santiago airport is closed and all flights are canceled until further notice, airline officials say.

The shocks were felt strongly also in Peru, Argentina and Ecuador.
