Vancouver Olympic Champion 'Begged' to Represent Bulgaria

Vancouver Olympic champion Anastazia Kuzmina reportedly begged to represent Bulgaria before the start of the 2009/2010 season.

Kuzmina who won gold in the Women's Biathlon Sprint 7.5km and Silver in the Women's Biathlon Pursuit 10km is representing Slovakia allegedly asked to represent Bulgaria according to former coach Boran Hadzhiev.

The Russian, who in 2007 gained Slovakian citizenship, had been third or fourth reserve for her home country according to Hadzhiev. He added that she asked him last summer to do everything possible for her to be naturalized and compete for Bulgaria.

Hadzhiev stated that he had discussed the issue with the Bulgarian federation but they had not taken a positive decision. He added that Kuzmina and Pavlina Filipova could have formed a very strong Bulgarian team, “which now may not happen for years”.
