A coal mine methane explosion in Northwest Turkey has killed 17 workers, BBC reports Wednesday, citing Turkish news agencies.

The blast happened in a mine 20km outside Dursunbey, in the Balikesir Province causing the collapse of an underground chamber. 29 workers were rescued after the blast. Several of them were taken to hospital with severe burns.

Turkey’s mines are known for their poor safety record.

The explosion comes two months after a blast at a mine in Bursa killed 19. The country's worst mining disaster was in 1992, when 270 miners were killed near the Black Sea port of Zonguldak.
