Tsetska Tsacheva, the Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, has said that the country needs each and every one of its citizens, especially in conditions of economic crisis.

Tsacheva was speaking on Monday at the opening of a National Assembly round table on fighting poverty, as the Bulgarian Parliament inaugurated the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in cooperation with trade unions, NGOs and the media.

She stated that the fight against poverty and social exclusion had many dimensions - in terms of income, opportunities for quality education, and in terms of health and social services.

"The Parliament of the Republic of Bulgaria is already working on these changes," she stressed.

Zinaida Zlatanova, Head of the EC Representation in Bulgaria, commented that the European Year for Combating Poverty comes at the right time, when Europe needs to speak with a single voice.

She cited a social survey dating from the autumn of 2009, which showed that, out of every ten citizens across Europe, nine considered that poverty was a serious problem inside their own countries.
