Bulgaria President Georgi Parvanov has backed the idea of the planned US missile shield protecting the country from attack.

Parvanov confirmed Saturday that no formal discussions had happened between Bulgaria and the US regarding the missile shield and said he was happy that the Bulgarian Foreign Affairs Ministry had earlier categorically denied any such talks.

He continued by suggesting that Bulgaria should secure its defense issues with full discussions within NATO. He added that “if there is a missile shield that covers the territory of NATO there is no sense in leaving say Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey outside the shield’s scope, as we are all close to potential threats.”

Parvanov concluded by saying he hopes that Russia and the US come to an understanding over the issue.
