More and more witnesses are contacting the Bulgarian law enforcement institutions over the “Octopus” mafia ring investigation.

This has been announced by the Sofia City Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov, who said more than 10 new witnesses have appeared in the recent days to testify in the investigation against a total of seven suspects including ex secret agent Aleksei Petrov.

The members of the “Octopus” gang are accused of racketeering, financial crimes such as the draining of the Kremikovtzi steel-maker, and enticement into prostitution. They have been left behind bars.

Speaking before the media on Wednesday, Prosecutor Kokinov asked the public for a credit of trust while the investigation is ongoing.

“The circle is open. We are going to go as far as the evidence leads us,” Kokinov declared making it clear that it was not unusual to have a surge of witnesses once the leader of a crime ring is arrested.

He explained that the investigation was going to look at who provided political cover and patronage to Aleksei Petrov’s alleged organized crime group.
