The Bulgarian government has approved new regulations that permit the Minister of Foreign Affairs to set up a new Crisis Center, and to streamline its departments.

The Crisis Center will be responsible for organizing and coordinating the work of the Ministry in the event of crisis situations involving Bulgarians abroad, according to the regulations approved by the Council of Ministers on Weddnesday.

Until now, crisis situations had normally been handled by the Foreign Ministry under the leadership of deputy ministers.

These structural changes had been initiated by former Foreign Minister Rumiana Jeleva, and were followed up for official approval by her successor, Nikolay Mladenov.

The changes provide for the merging of the "International Law" and "European Law and Legal Representation before the Judicial Institutions of the European Union" departments into a new Directorate that will undertake the functions of both previous units.

Also, the "International Cooperation and Development" and "Economic Cooperation and Regional Initiatives" Directorates are to be merged, in order to improve the coordination necessary for relevant departmental activities.

Once the planned changes have been put in place, the Foreign Ministry consist of 23 Directorates, an Inspectorate and the Crisis Center Unit.

1 480 employees will work at the Ministry - 594 in the administration of the Foreign Ministry, 42 in the political cabinet, and 844 in diplomatic missions abroad.
