Bulgaria Interior Hits Customs, Revenue Agencies

The National Revenue Agency (NRA) and the Interior Ministry are conducting since Wednesday morning a joint operation to counteract draining of Value Added Tax (VAT).

Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, says that there is a significant leak of information from the Customs Agency and NRA along with numerous violations.

Tsvetanov further informed his Ministry is making major efforts to counteract the criminal activities and detained already 3 revenue agents from the central city of Veliko Tarnovo for VAT draining. The police also checked 5 addresses in the city and the searches are ongoing.

One high-ranking Customs employee with a15-year-long career has also been detained for contraband with perfumes valued at over BGN 4 M.

The police found during the raids promissory notes for USD 1 M that have been distributed to several businessman from the Black Sea city of Burgas.
