The two Bulgarian ladies holding the highest political positions on the international political scene are discussing joint initiatives to provide assistance to earthquake devastated Haiti.

The UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova and the Bulgarian EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva, hold a meeting in Brussels Wednesday to talk about ways to secure the much needed housing, food and medications for the earthquake victims.

During her trip to Belgium, Bokova intends to personally ask the European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, to make preserving cultural heritage a major part of the effort to rebuild Haiti. In addition to housing, many schools, museums and libraries have been destroyed while there is mass pillage of art collections and historic artifacts, according to Bokova.

Bokova and Georgieva will discuss concrete measures the EU can implement to assist Haiti. The EC is considering granting additional financial help for the country’s culture and education.

Both are planning to visit Haiti and it will become clear after their meeting if they will travel together.
