Deputy Sofia Prosecutor, Roman Vasilev, has praised the new model of “teamwork” between Bulgaria’s Prosecutor’s Office, the Interior Ministry, and the State National Security Agency DANS.

Vasilev pointed out that the new model in which a prosecutor is teamed up with top police officers and DANS agents and they work together on highly confidential cases of great significance was introduced in the spring of 2009 by the Borisov government, and already produced great results.

He attributed Tuesday’s busting of the Director of the Migration Directorate at the Interior Ministry, Stefan Hristov, to this new teamwork model.

Vasilev explained that the arrested Director used his position to provide illegal assistance to foreign citizens coming to Bulgaria. He provided them with fake documents stating they had a permanent job in the country thus making them eligible for a permanent residence status.

The Prosecutor announced that the signal about Hristov’s abuses came from the State National Security Agency DANS. He made it clear that there was no connection between the arrest of Stefan Hristov in the Interior Ministry and the violations in the State Refugee Agency uncovered on Monday.

According to the prosecutors, Stefan Hristov headed an organized crime group, and it will become clear within several days just how big the group was.
