European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva has demanded that the bloc allots another EUR 90 M for the earthquake-torn Haiti.

“The situation there is very difficult and it is important that aid reaches the people who are not in the media spotlight,” Georgieva told reporters in Sofia.

Georgieva arrived in Bulgaria on Sunday to attend a fund-raising concert for Haiti, named “Everything is Love” and organized by Modern Theater and Bulgarian National Television.

The event was held under the auspices of Commissioner Georgieva and featured famous Bulgarian actors, actresses, singers and dancers.

Bulgaria's new European Commissioner, in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, has announced she will visit the earthquake-torn Haiti by the end of the month.

During her hearing on February 3, Georgieva praised the speed and generosity of the European Union’s response to the Haiti earthquake – something that has come in for criticism in many quarters.

“If I’m confirmed, it will be my immediate duty to make sure we Europeans bring to Haiti the best our union has to offer,” she said then.

Talking to the Bulgarian press on Sunday, Georgieva highly praised the hard line to combat crime and corruption that Bulgaria's government has taken, describing as “excellent” the latest smashing of an organized crime group in Sofia on allegations of being involved for more than a decade in money laundering, racketeering, drug trafficking, bribery and tax fraud.

The Commissioner is scheduled to hold talks with representatives of the Bulgarian government on Monday.

Bulgaria named World Bank official Kristalina Georgieva to replace Rumiana Jeleva, who withdrew her candidacy for the post of EU commissioner for humanitarian aid after politicians accused her of incompetence and dubious business practices.
