Protected Witness Backs off in Top Murder Trial over Threats

Ivo Ilchev, who was supposed to help prove the accusations against top mafia bosses of plotting several murder, has backed off because he and his family have been threatened.

This was announced by Sofia City Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov after Ilchev, who had been given the status of a protected witness, denied knowing the Marguin Brothers and the other defendants charged with the murder of controversial radio and TV host Bobi Tsankov, and three other similar plots.

Kokinov said the two prosecutors working on the case talked Ilchev in the intermission of the court hearing, and he admitted that he had received a phone call with threats against his own life and the lives of the members of his family.

The Sofia City Prosecutor believes that is why Ilchev denied knowing any of the defendants. He announced that the prosecutors had already learned the phone number from which the threat call had been made, and that they knew the name of the person who called Ilchev but refused to provide any further details.

“Ilchev can no longer be of any use on this case. The Prosecutor’s Office is going to file a perjury suit against him,” Kokinov said.
