Bulgaria Elects New Health Insurance Fund Head

Bulgaria's parliament has elected Zheni Nacheva as the new director of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The appointment, which the opposition slammed as “political”, was secured with the votes of the ruling GERB party and their political allies.

GERB party nominated Nacheva for the post following the resignation of the previous head Rumyana Todorova.

“This is the first time that the candidate for NHIF is an independent and proved professional,” Lachezar Ivanov, head of the health commission in parliament, said from the rostrum.

This is the first time that the head of the fund is elected by the members of parliament. The appointment so far was made following a contest.
