The European Commission's Vice-President, Günter Verheugen, had asked the Greek government to undertake urgent action to reinstate the free transit between Bulgaria and Greece.

Verheugen says impeding the transit of people and goods is a violation if European laws.

The EC VP had informed the Bulgarian and Romanian Agriculture Ministers about his request towards Greece in an official letter, the Bulgarian Agriculture Ministry press center informs Tuesday.

Verheugen's move comes in response to a signal send by the two Ministers on January 19, in which Bulgaria and Romania alarm abut the huge losses the countries are suffering over the continuing blockade on the Bulgarian-Greece border and the protests of the Greek farmers.

The EC VP reminds that any further action on the part of the Commission will very much depend on detailed information submitted by Bulgaria and Romania, as agreed in Brussels on January 27.

According to the report, already sent by Bulgaria, the losses from January 18 until February 3 amount to EUR 6,5 M.
