A deal between the governing circles and the people controlling organized crime during the term of Sergey Stanishev has most likely been behind the reduction of mafia tension in Bulgaria after 2005.

This opinion has been expressed by Bulgarian criminal journalist Slavi Angelov in an interview for Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency).

Angelov, who is the author of the best selling book “9 mm – The True Story of the Bulgarian Mafia”, said that this claim could not be proven but that he had information from sources from the criminal world confirming it. In 2000-2005, Bulgaria saw a peak in the number of gangland killings of alleged mafia bosses.

Angelov also said his investigation revealed that the Bulgarian Interior Ministry could have busted the so called “Impudent” kidnappers’ gang, which is believed to have been responsible for at least 13 high-profile kidnappings, as early as the first abduction because it got the name of one of the key gangsters.

Slavi Angelov made clear his belief that the murders of writers Bobi Tsankov and Georgi Stoev were not directed against free speech in Bulgaria but had resulted from their personal dealings.
