Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said Tuesday that the President’s veto of the amended Defense Act was not of any political significance.

Last week Borisov supported the suspension veto imposed by the President over the act which reduced some of his powers as Commander-in-Chief of the Bulgarian armed forces.

“I do not support the President, it is just that this part of the act went through without me reading it, without my knowledge, and my advisors somehow let it through,” Borisov declared on Nova TV when asked why he changed his party GERB’s position over limiting the powers of the head of state.

“If the President and I start warring, it will not be about who should have more power but about who should have less, believe me,” the PM said rejecting the allegations of an inter-institutional conflict.

He has pointed out that the vetoed amendments concern the powers of the President in wartime which meant that the entire discussion about reducing the presidential powers was not only void but also useless.

“We are just going to a goat for wool, wasting our energies with this rhetoric,” Borisov stated dismissing the political significance of the veto.
