The European Commission announced the winner of a competition to design a new EU-wide logo for organic food – a leaf formed from the stars of the EU.

The logo, known as the Euro-leaf, will be compulsory on all EU pre-packaged organic foods from 1 July this year.

Over the past two months, some 130,000 people have voted online to choose the new organic symbol from three finalists.

The winning design is by Dusan Milenkovic, a student from Germany, who gained 63% of the overall vote for his “Euro-leaf” logo.

In all, Milenkovic won 63% of the votes cast for the shortlist of three, selected from over 3,500 entries.

Milenkovic's design features the 12 EU stars in the shape of a leaf on a green background.

The designer will receive EUR 6,000 in prize money, while the two runners-up will receive EUR 3,500 and EUR 2,500 respectively.

Announcing the winner in Brussels today, Fischer Boel said that the roll-out of the logo would be accompanied by a campaign to promote organic food.

"I'm delighted that we now have a fresh EU organic food logo," said farm commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.

"This exercise has raised the profile of organic food and we now have a logo which everyone will be able to identify with.

"It's a nice elegant design and I look forward to buying products carrying this logo from July this year."
