Sofia City Court ordered Friday night the permanent detention of the police officer who is suspect of having helped the notorious high-profile kidnappers’ gang known as “The Impudent.”

Policeman Yordan Kostov is very likely to have committed the crime he is suspected of, according to the Sofia City Court.

According to the defense, the decision of the Court was based solely on the testimony of one witness. The ruling could be appealed on February 11.

Kostov was arrested on February 2, 2010, on accusations of abuse of power. He is believed to have secured lighter detention conditions to the members of “The Impudent” kidnappers gang. The suspected cooperation referred to the period before the gang was busted in December 2009 (as the gangsters have impressive criminal records).

One member of the gang, Pavel Petkov, had been released with Kostov’s help under a contract between the prison and a private construction firm. The documents, however, indicated that the mobster worked on the “construction” of his own house. Later the police discovered that Petkov rented the neighboring house that the kidnappers used to hold some of their victims.

Bulgaria’s Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has announced that a total of five police officers are suspected of having helped the Impudent gangsters.
