Varna, Bulgaria’s Black Sea capital, allegedly faces a grave crisis after the head of the municipality company ‘Obredi’ announced that there will be no space in the municipality cemeteries after March 1.

Lyubo Lyubchev, the head of ‘Obredi’ stated Friday that the situation in 3 of Varna’s 6 graveyards is already critical, with the Topola site over 80% full and places set-aside for Muslim funerals being used by Christians.

Local councilors delayed a meeting that is now set for next Tuesday that was set to decide on what measures to take over the situation. The municipality has also put off previous decisions to buy extra land, to be used as cemeteries, over overpriced offers.

Arguments between the councilors continue but Lyubchev warned that even if land is purchased now, there will not be enough time to regulate it before all 6 current burial grounds are full.
