Bulgaria's Georgieva Confirmed as New EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner

The Development Committee of the EP has confirmed Bulgaria’s Designate Kristalina Georgieva as the new EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid.

After her spectacular performance during the three-hour hearing at the EP on Wednesday, Georgieva was confirmed unanimously by the Development Committee.

Its members are currently drawing up the letter to EP President Jerzy Buzek in order to confirm that she will be the last, 26th member of the new EC.

Thus, it has become certain that on February 9, 2010, the second Barroso Commission will be confirmed into office by the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The new hearing was imposed by the failed and withdrawn nomination of Bulgaria's former Foreign Affairs Minister, Rumiana Jeleva. Jeleva withdrew after a weak competency performance and amidst allegations of conflict of interests. After the hearing, the Socialists, the Liberals and the Greens at the EP refused to support the first Bulgarian nomination.

By declaring that in the last 18 years she had worked for an institution with very strict conflict of interests and behavior rules, maintaining the highest standards for its leadership, the Bulgarian EU hopeful also manged to distance herself from one of the main reasons for Jeleva's failure – the alleged conflict of interests.
