Bulgaria's prime minister managed to deal with the crisis that came in the wake of the EC nominee farce thanks to his skills of a perfect improviser, says a Bulgarian political analyst in an interview for the Austrian newspaper Die Presse.

“The resignation of Rumiana Jeleva, the cabinet reshuffle and the nomination of Kristalina Georgieva for European Commissioner made it possible for Borisov to bring the crisis to an end,” Ivan Krastev says.

According to him the ability to sense the public sentiments and improvise as a jazz musician is one of the strongest aces Borisov holds.

“Resembling a commander of a partisan unit, Borisov tries to stage an ambush to his political rivals and attacks without fear from all possible directions,” Krastev comments.

The political analyst points out that many members in Borisov government, such as Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, has commendable expertise.

“The question now is whether the government will manage to keep the balance act,” Krastev said.

According to Ivan Krastev the bigger part of Bulgaria's problems are not just Bulgarians, but typical of the post-communist countries.

“Unrealistic expectations lead nowhere. When the western elites ask Bulgaria when it will succeed in its combat against corruption, they don't aim to change Bulgaria, but to show the electorate in their own countries how determined their politicians are,” says Krastev.

“It is just a different form of populism,” he adds.
