Sofia City Court (SCC) ruled that the Bulgarian pedophile group arrested on January 20 should be kept in custody, pending further criminal investigation.

Six men had been arrested in police raids on properties in Sofia and Sliven, following a tipoff from a Bulgarian parliamentarian. Electronic devices and video tapes had also been confiscated from the premises.

The members of the pedophile group have been names as Kliment Kunsh, Georgi Lazarov, Assen Nikolov, Nikolay Ganev, Pencho Chavdarov and Asen Ivanov.

Five members of the group lodged unsuccessful appeals against their continued detention. The remaining person did not enter an appeal.

According to the Interior Ministry, the group had been active in enticing young teenagers by using internet dating services and, on meeting their victims, of drugging or intoxicating them before assaulting them.

By making video recordings of their activities, they then blackmailed the youths into providing further victims.

Friday’s court session was then adjourned, in order to protect the identities of the under-age victims.
