The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) declared Tuesday they will not support the cabinet changes proposed by the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party.

The BSP leader and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, says that not only will his party not vote on the nominations of Nikolay Mladenov as Foreign Affairs Minister and of Anyu Angelov as Defense Minister, but will demand the dismissal of several other ministers.

BSP wants Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, to be fired first over his proposed reforms, followed by Health Minister, Bozhidar Nanev, for his intentions to close about 140 local hospitals and Environment Minister, Nona Karadzhova, for the scandal with the alleged concealed information from Brussels. (Karadzhova claims the former cabinet, which was led by BSP, swept under the rug some damming letters from the European Commission. Stanishev says the allegations are the cabinet’s crisis PR.)

The socialists further oppose the appointment of internationally renowned macroeconomist, Ilian Mihov, as future Deputy PM, saying the move aims at diverting the attention from the failure of the GERB ex-EU Commissioner nominee, Rumania Jeleva.

Meanwhile, the other main opposition force – the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), also announced they will not support the changes.

The Party Deputy Chair, Lyutvi Mestan, quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio, BNR, declared DPS does not agree with the fact that GERB have turned Bulgaria in the sole EU country where important cabinet changes are introduced without serious debate and consensus.

On Monday, the conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party also declared that 9 RZS Members of the Parliament will not support the new GERB ministers nominations

The parliamentary vote on the cabinet's reshuffle is scheduled for Wednesday. 121 votes are needed for the changes to pass. With the unwavering support of the 21 MPs from the far-right, nationalist Ataka party, the 116 GERB MPs will have the required number of votes.
