Bulgaria Supreme Court Postpones Striking Turkey Election Results

Bulgaria’s Supreme Constitutional Court is requesting additional documents and expertise in the case of the summer general elections vote in neighboring Turkey.

The case stems from a complaint of the conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party regarding numerous, alleged, irregularities and violations during the vote of Bulgarian citizens living in Turkey for the election of Members of the Bulgarian Parliament on July 5, 2009.

RZS demand the annulment of the Turkey vote results.

The magistrates are expected to rule on the case by the end of February.

Earlier Tuesday, RZS announced the rule was expected immediately. The party insists the annulment of the results is necessary and an important step in reforming the electoral system in order to end the practices of vote buying and forgery of results in some of the polls.

RZS also reiterate their demand for convening a Great General Assembly and the creation of a new Constitution.

“RZS expresses their hope the Constitutional Court will demonstrate responsibility and fairness when ruling on the case and will not allow for the secret coalition between the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party and the opposition ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) to pressure the magistrates to decide against the annulment of the election results,” the RZS declaration reads.
