Bulgaria Interior Minister Plans to 'Tighten Leaking Tap'

The Bulgarian Minister of Interior, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, has pledged to clamp down on information leaks within his ministry.

He said that "tightening the tap" of information leakage would be done through legal changes already prepared, admitting that the ministry had a serious problem.

Speaking on Darik Radio on Saturday, Tsvetanov announced that action had already been taken to shut down all teams working on certain specific projects within his ministry.

The Interior Minister also remarked that cooperation with DANS and the prosecution had recently been improved, conditions that were previously lacking.

He cited the examples of the detection of the kidnapping and murder of Bulgarian businessman Stoyan Stoyanov; the successful arrest of the "Impudent" kidnapping gang, and that of the so-called "Crocodiles" gang.

Tsvetanov denied rumors of tension between the prime Minister and GERB on the issue of Rumiana Jeleva's remaining in office as Foreign Minister.

"If Rumyana Jeleva had remained Foreign Minister, our opponents would have continued to generate a scandal. That's why the political decision was taken for her to be released as she had wished," explained the Deputy Chief of GERB.

Commenting on Kristalina Georgieva's candidacy for European Commissioner, the Minister said that it was the most honorable and most professionally prepared candidature of Bulgaria in the EC.

Tsvetanov said that, until now, Georgieva had actively participated in the development of GERB's economic program, and had given valuable economic advice, but that, due to her business commitments, she was unable to engage more actively in the work of the government.
