The Bulgarian Red Cross has warned people not to travel unless it is absolutely necessary, and to make sure they are carrying fully-charged GSM phones, in case of emergency.

The advice comes as temperatures throughout Bulgaria are set to plummet over the weekend and into Monday.

The Red Cross further advises travelers to check the weather situation before they begin their journeys, to wear sufficient warm clothing, suitable footwear, and to carry emergency water and food with them. Their vehicle should also be properly equipped for the conditions.

The organization said that it has already instructed it regional centers to prepare for providing emergency assistance, including the protection of people from frostbite.

Four centers will be organized around Plovdiv, to distribute hot drinks on Monday. Similar points will be opened in Varna, Lovech, Razgrad, Ruse and elsewhere.

Schools in the Varna Municipality of Beloslav will be closed on Monday, in anticipation of the anticipated low temperatures.

Forecasters have predicted minimum Saturday temperatures as low as -22ºC in Plovdiv and -21ºC in Ruse. Sofia will be about -13ºC minimum.

On Sunday, Sofia will dip to -17ºC, and Ruse to -22ºC, where on Monday it will be even colder, reaching -24C, along with Varna. The Burgas minimum temperature will fall to around -17ºC.
