Bulgaria Parliament Speaker, Tsetska Tsacheva, has stated that she has “never doubted” that Rumiana Jeleva will be the new Bulgarian EU Commissioner.

Tsacheva said Saturday in Pleven; “I have never doubted that Rumiana Jeleva will be the new EU Commissioner of Bulgaria, the allegations against her are not serious. She added that after EC President Jose Manuel Barroso and the Bulgarian government had nominated her, with a view of her meeting all the rules and regulations, she will remain as Bulgaria’s designated EU Commissioner.

According to Tsacheva, what happened in Brussels this week is a typical Bulgarian action and she added that no other EU country would allow such arguments in the European Parliament even if they have politicians with diverse opinions. She slammed the attack on Jeleva as frivolous.

Jeleva has been subject to extensive speculation concerning alleged conflict of interests and allegations of being the weakest link in the new EU executive, since her hearing last Tuesday, which included a heated argument with Bulgarian liberal MEP Antoniya Parvanova.

Tsacheva concluded by confirming that the Bulgarian Parliament is willing to provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the Haiti earthquake; "In this tragedy, our country can not remain complacent and we are obliged to render assistance."
