The Chair of the Bulgarian Red Cross, Hristo Grigorov, has called on Bulgarians to help raise funds for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

“This is a global disaster, not local, one of the greatest tragedies of the last ten years,” Grigorov stated Saturday, cited by Bulgarian National Radio. He added that it is normal in the early days after such an event to see chaos but that things will improve.”

Grigorov continued that Bulgaria is willing to send a team to help the 2 million people who need food but that this will not be necessary as the country is now secured by professional teams and the US military. He also noted that the International Red Cross has appealed for EUR 100 M of donations.

The M-Tel number 1255 for helping Bulgarian children who have suffered in car accidents, has now been designated solely to collecting aid for Haiti. Grigorov added that the other Bulgarian mobile operators will be contacted on Monday to help.

Meanwhile, he concluded by commenting on the EU Commissioner-Designate Rumiana Jeleva’s performance in her Brussels hearing earlier this week; “Genetically modified politicians are trying to determine your fate and mine. To go before the world and play out such scenes is unworthy."
