Greek Farmers Set to Blockade Bulgaria Border

Protesting Greek farmers are expected to blockade one of the three existing crossing points on the Bulgaria-Greece border Friday.

The farmers are expected to block the Ilinden-Eksohi border crossing point for about 2-3 hours on Friday, according to the Deputy District Governor of Blagoevgrad, Georgi Bahanov, as cited by Darik Radio. They are demanding better prices for their produce.

The Kulata-Promahon border-crossing point, which usually sees the bulk of the truck and car traffic between Bulgaria and Greece, is most likely going to be blockaded on Monday, January 18, as the striking farmers have received a permit for protesting for ten days.

The start of the blockade of the border by the Greek farmers will coincide with the opening of a fourth border crossing point later on Friday connecting the Bulgarian town of Zlatograd and the Greek town of Xanthi. The new border crossing point, however, will not be fit for trucks, only for lighter vehicles.
