Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov has stated that it is not “tragic” if Rumiana Jeleva is not endorsed as Bulgaria’s new European Commissioner.

Following the news that the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso is expected Thursday to announce his position on the issue of alleged conflict of interests of Bulgarian Commissioner-Designate Jeleva, Borisov said “there is nothing tragic if a commissioner is not endorsed, it is tragic that the previous government failed to construct our highways.”

Borisov, speaking in an interview for BNT Thursday, added that the only thing that has been agreed with Brussels is to check whether there has been a conflict of interests under its various interpretations in the Jeleva case. He continued that he will now wait to hear from the lawyers.

Borisov continued that there are different interpretations of conflict of interests and that he hoped Jeleva had checked things out.

“I know that there has been no conflict of interests in the true meaning of the phrase and the lawyers have filled in declarations to show this,” he added and concluded that he hoped that there would be no need for “Plan B”.

Borisov also criticized the way Jeleva was attacked by some MEPs even before her hearing; “I have been a teacher and know that it is bad to decide the test results before the exam. The attack even started in Bulgaria from the Bulgarian Socialist Party, who have performed awfully in Europe.”
