GERB MEP: Bulgarians behind Assault on EC Bidder Jeleva

During her Tuesday’s hearing at the EP, the Bulgarian EC-Designate Rumiana Jeleva met with “unacceptable atmosphere”, Bulgarian MEP from the ruling party GERB Mariya Nedelcheva told Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency).

According to Nedelcheva, Jeleva’s hearing at the Development Committee of the EP during was rather hostile to the Bulgarian Commissioner-Designate, and the sitting was conducted by its Chair, Greens MEP Eva Joly, in a way unfavorable to Jeleva.

“The atmosphere was such that Jeleva could not concentrate and provide proper answers to the questions about her proposed portfolio,” Nedelcheva told Novinite.com.

According to the political coordinators of the Committee – gave unsatisfactory answers to questions referring to allegations she was involved in conflict of interests, and to her portfolio on humanitarian aid.

“There have been insinuations and speculations for a month and a half about Jeleva being tangled in conflict of interests, and those have been based on media publications. It turned out that Mrs. Antoniya Parvanova (Bulgarian Liberal MEP) was also involved in this. It is a pity for Bulgaria – to see Bulgarians assault our own candidate,” the GERB MEP said.

In her words, the situation with the nomination of the Bulgarian Foreign Minister Jeleva for EC member was going to develop in two stages – first, the legal and financial services of the EU had to clarify the financial information about Jeleva, and second, the Development Committee would decide on Monday whether it was in favor of or against Jeleva’s nomination.
