From April 1, 2010 it will be absolutely essential for all Bulgarians to hold the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to travel to other EU countries as well as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

The Bulgaria Health Ministry confirmed the news Tuesday that in practice means that traveling Bulgarians will not be allowed to leave the country if they do not show the EHIC at the border.

From April 1 the ordinary medical insurance is no longer valid and it can not be used to go abroad.

The Health Ministry said that the goal is to be 100% sure that Bulgarian citizens will receive free medical assistance for overseas health problems. They added that the EHIC is only valid for treatment in state and municipal hospitals abroad.
