Kasim Dal is set to succeed Ahmed Dogan as the leader of the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party, Lyudmil Georgiev reported Tuesday.

Professor Georgiev, a member of the DPS Central Operational Bureau, told BNT that Dal was “the natural choice as he is a darling and emblem of the party.” He added that together with Dogan, Dal also had the largest contribution to “the excellent presentation of DPS in the parliamentary elections last year.”

Georgiev, who is often used as the voice-box of DPS leader Dogan, explained that Dal stepped down from his position as Vice-Chair of DPS on Monday to prepare for becoming leader but he did not add when this would happen.

Dal himself has recently been caught up in the controversy surrounding the shady businessman “Krasio from Pleven”. Dal even admitted that Krasimir Georgiev aka Krasio is his friend and that they often hold telephone conversations.

The Krasio affair started after in October it became clear that ‘Krasio’ was a ‘piggy bank’ who is alleged to have offered magistrates to secure their appointment to high ranking positions through the vote of the Supreme Judicial Council in exchange for EUR 200 000 in cash.

Kasim Dal was born in 1962 in a village near the Black Sea City of Varna. He is married and has two sons. Under the communist regime he served a three-year prison sentence for his political activities.

He was a founding member of the DPS party in 1990 and became deputy chairman in 1993, a position he remained in until Monday.

Dal is also currently the Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Security and Public Order.
