The popular Sofia theater “Salza i Smiah” (Tear and Laughter) will not be evicted from the building of the “Slavianska Besseda” community center after all.

The news was announced by the President of “Slavianska Besseda” Board of Trustees, Petar Raizhekov, upon conclusion of the meeting with the theater's leadership, held at the office of Culture Minister, Vezhdi Rashidov, Monday.

A new rent contract will be on the table by the end of the week with more reasonable prices, Raizhekov said, adding they would align with the amount requested earlier by the “Salza i Smiah” Director, Ventsislav Kisiov – BGN 7 000 to 10 000 a month. The contract will have a 2,5-year term.

The problem arose last Thursday when the management of the community center gave an ultimatum to the theater to sign a contract by the weekend, agreeing to pay the staggering BGN 360 000 a year or BGN 1 000 a day for rent. The amount is impossible for any of the financially strapped Bulgarian culture institutions.
