Prosecutor: Murdered Bulgarian Journalist Was Valuable Informant

Murdered controversial Bulgarian journalist and radio host, Bobi Tsankov, had offered his services as an informant for the Sofia District Prosecutor Office.

The information was revealed Saturday by Sofia District Prosecutor, Nikolay Kokinov, in an interview for the daily “24 Chassa” (24 Hours), saying he had numerous talks with Tsankov in the presence of witnesses, employees of the Prosecutor’s Office.

“Yes, I have spoken to Tsankov. He offered his services, wanted to contribute information. He was quite useful and valuable, and you will soon know how,” Kokinov explained, confirming earlier reports Tsankov has been a frequent visitor of his office.

Bobi Tsankov was gunned down in broad daylight in a busy boulevard in Sofia Tuesday. He was known for his ties with the mafia and for publications revealing the dark secrets of the underworld.

In the interview, Kokinov also admits he read the journalist’s books and articles long before his murder, adding not all facts in them were true, Tsankov had given his first book to the Prosecutor as a gift with the words that two thirds of the details inside were fiction.

When asked how he felt over receiving threats and having to move around with security guards, Kokinov says this is part of his job, but an unpleasant one.

“For months now criminals feel pressured. Their space is shrinking and gangsters become bolder and more rootless. They are nervous and feel restricted because they can no longer obtain the money they are used to,” Kokinov points out.

In a Friday interview for Darik radio, the Sofia Prosecutor further extended a recommendation to alleged criminal boss, Nikolay Marinov aka the Little Marguin, to turn himself up to the police, who have been searching for him since the day of the murder. His older brother, Krasimir, is already charged with plotting Tsankov’s assassination.

Kokinov confirmed for Darik radio that three people have left the crime scene on “Stamboliiski” boulevard Tuesday. The information had been obtained from tapes from video cameras in the area. It was also confirmed that the shots were fired from 2 handguns.
