The Bulgarian capital Sofia has been blockaded

Sofia Municipality is going to fine the major firms responsible for snow cleaning because of a delay which led to massive traffic jams around the Bulgarian capital Tuesday morning.

According to Veska Georgieva, Director of the Sofia Municipality Inspectorate, the concessionaires started cleaning the snow an hour later that they were supposed to. This led to the freezing of the newly emerged snow cover in many of the large residential quarters.

Thus, the firms Intercoservice - responsible for “Krasno Selo”, “Titan Chistota – Sofia” - responsible for Sredets, Lozenetz, Iskar, Mladost, Studentski Grad, Vitosha, and Pancharevo, and “Chistota – Iskar” - responsible for Lyulin, Ovcha Kupel, and Triaditsa – will not receive part of the sums they are due for their services.

The delayed snow cleaning caused huge traffic jams on the central Sofia boulevards – Tsarigradsko Shose, Bulgaria, Tsar Boris III, and the Sofia Beltway. Many of the public transport vehicles have been running about an hour late since the early morning. A total of 120 light traffic accidents occurred in the Bulgarian capital as a result of the inclement weather and the improper cleaning.
